The Chunky Plaid Mug Rug Crochet Pattern
Are you ready for possibly the quickest and easiest crochet pattern I have designed thus far? Introducing the Chunky Plaid Mug Rug crochet pattern. A super quick and repetitive pattern that is perfect for last minute market inventory prep and would make a great addition to a housewarming gift basket!
This pattern is also very demure, very mindful and cutesy (IYKYK). But seriously plaid is such a classic and could really be “appropriate” year round. The variety of color combos you could use is almost too overwhelming to think about, which also makes it such a great year round pattern. Brighter and more vibrant colors for spring and summer. Warmer neutrals for the fall and winter.

I chose summery colors for the pattern design because technically we are still in the summer months, with it still be August. You better believe I am already planning a classic buffalo plaid set for my house. Maybe even some greens for a little holiday vibe? Without further ado let’s get started. Happy Crocheting!

Materials
Weight 4 Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn (yarn I used is listed below)
*Hand Steamer (optional)
Yarn Choice
For most of my mug rug patterns I prefer to use a thicker and tighter spin worsted weight cotton yarn. I feel like it gives the mug rug tons of detail and durability. I personally love Lily Sugar n’ Cream Cotton and Loops and Threads Everyday Cotton.
For this pattern I used the following yarn:
(A) Loops & Threads Everyday Cotton in Coral – approx. 55 yards
(B) Loops & Threads Everyday Cotton in Salmon – approx. 40 yards
~or~
(A) Loops & Threads Everyday Cotton in Royal Blue – approx. 55 yards
(B) Loops & Threads Everyday Cotton in Aqua – approx. 40 yards

Attaching the Fringe
- To create the fringe cut 12 inch pieces of yarn in Color A and Color B. You will need 3 strands of yarn to create 1 fringe.
To attach the fringe, grab 3 strands of yarn. With a crochet hook, push the hook through the far left foundation chain. Fold the 3 strands of yarn in half, looping the middle of the strands onto the crochet hook. Match the color of the fringe to the color of the square you are attaching the fringe to.

Fold the strands through the loop.

Tighten to create the fringe.

Repeat for every other chain/stitch.
Repeat on the other side of the mug rug.
ENJOY!
