The Big Ole Needle Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern

Hey Guys!

Introducing the 3rd and final piece to the Makers Trio pattern set (I just made that up, lol) The Big Ole Needle Wall Hanging! Joining its friends Big Ole Hook and Big Ole Snippers, this wall hanging completes the set. I wanted this set of patterns to reflect the essential tools needed for all crocheters!

With the exception of yarn; a hook, snippers/scissors and needle are all you need to get started crocheting. What drew me to fiber art to begin with was the small amount of materials needed to get started. Essentially all you need are the 3 basics and a good YouTube tutorial and off you go.

It is a great low cost craft to start and the possibilities for creativity are endless. Although you will definitely be susceptible to a yarn addiction once you get started. No worries though, it happens to the best of us!

Materials

*4.50 mm Crochet Hook

Weight 4 Worsted Weight Yarn (yarn I used is listed below)

*Yarn Needle

*Scissors

Wooden Branch or *Dowel Rod

*Hand Steamer (optional)

Yarn Choice

For most of my wall hanging patterns I prefer to use a thicker and tighter spun worsted weight yarn. I feel like it gives a lot more definition to the piece and details tend to stand out more. I really don’t focus too much on the texture of the yarn because I steam every single one of my wall hangings, which softens the piece and makes it more flexible and flowy. This is especially helpful for tighter crocheters. The brands I tend to gravitate the most towards are Red Heart Super Saver, Loops & Threads Impeccable and We Crochet Brava Worsted.

For this wall hanging I used the following yarn:

–Loops & Threads Impeccable in Aran- approx. 150 yards

~Grays are held together~

-Hobbii Friends 8/4 Cotton in Light Gray- approx. 50 yards

-Hobbii Friends 8/4 Cotton in Silver- approx. 50 yards

Color Abbreviations

AR = Aran

GR = Grays

Stitch Key (US Terms)

Ch = Chain

St/sts = Stitch(es)

Sc = Single Crochet

Special Notes

-The wall hanging is worked in rows.

-The wall hanging is worked from the bottom up.

-The 1st st of each row should be placed into the same stitch as the turning chain.

-The turning chain does not count as the 1st stitch of the row.

-The pattern is written as: # of single crochet stitches (color abbreviation), example: 8 (BM) means 8 sc in Blue Moon.

–The gray shades are held and crocheted together.

-The odd rows are the right side rows. Even rows will be the wrong side.

-I used the color Aran in Loops & Threads Impeccable for the fringe.

Dimensions: 7 inches wide x 20 inches long (not including fringe)

Gauge: 16 sts x 19 rows = 4 inch square worked in single crochet.

Pattern

Begin by chaining 32 in Aran.

Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across. Ch 1, turn. (31)

Row 2 – Row 21: 15 (AR), 1 (GR), 15 (AR). Ch 1, turn. (31)

Row 22 – Row 53: 14 (AR), 3 (GR), 14 (AR). Ch 1, turn. (31)

Row 54 – Row 67: 13 (AR), 5 (GR), 13 (AR). Ch 1, turn. (31)

Row 68: 13 (AR), 2 (GR), 1 (AR), 2 (GR), 13 (AR). Ch 1, turn. (31)

Row 69: 12 (AR), 3 (GR), 1 (AR), 3 (GR), 12 (AR). Ch 1, turn. (31)

Row 70: 12 (AR), 2 (GR), 3 (AR), 2 (GR), 12 (AR). Ch 1, turn. (31)

Row 71: 12 (AR), 2 (GR), 3 (AR), 2 (GR), 12 (AR). Ch 1, turn. (31)

Follow the chart until Row 99. Fasten off after Row 99 and leave a 2 foot tail.

Hanging the Project

Fasten off after Row 99 leaving a 2 foot tail.

To attach the project to a dowel rod or tree branch; using a yarn needle, weave the tail over the dowel/branch and back under into the 1st stitch on the top of the wall hanging.

Repeat for each stitch on the top of the wall hanging.

Knot off and weave in your ends.

To hang the project, drill 2 small holes on either side of the branch/dowel. Thread through both holes with cotton yarn and knot off both ends. Trim the excess yarn. (Feel free to use your preferred method of hanging the project)

Attaching the Fringe

To attach the fringe, grab 3 strands of yarn. With a crochet hook, push the hook through the far left foundation chain. Fold the 3 strands of yarn in half, looping the middle of the strands onto the crochet hook.
